1938, dir. Alfred Hitchcock. We couldn’t publish one of these lists and exclude Hitchcock completely. The Lady Vanishes gets the nod for its portents of doom (it came out in 1938) as the little train speeds through its prewar Mitteleuropa wonderland. The train survives, the lady reappears, but it is clear that Mandrika—it may be the only made-up country in a Hitchcock film—is still screwed.
