A Letter From Us |
In terms of filmmaking—both independent and mainstream—you wouldn’t be too far off if you described the Pacific Northwest as North Hollywood. More so than for any other region of the country, the art and business of creating and showing films has fostered a culture of sophisticated filmgoers and a thriving community for a whole host of talented underground filmmakers, as well as spawned a vibrant network of festivals and agencies. It has also lined the city’s coffers with some much-needed cash. Of all the arts, filmmaking is probably the most likely to be successful as a good outlet for creative minds and good business; filmmaking brings over $200 million annually to Seattle and over $60 million of that goes directly to the people employed by the well over 100 projects that come through our region every year. And it’s not just Seattle: last year Portland was named among “MovieMaker” magazine’s top ten best cities in North America for independent moviemakers.
Of course, as with all the arts, filmmaking is not about the money. It’s about capturing the sentimental and the horrific, the mundane and the fantastical. It’s about reflecting our own lives

so closely that we often find ourselves more uncomfortable about our place in the world than we did when we entered the theatre. It’s about creating new worlds that allow us to escape our own and meet people we would never have a chance to come across. Filmmakers shed light on the quietest hopes and darkest fears of people thousands of miles away and they uncover the miraculous in our neighbors who we assumed to be boring and common.
Some say that nothing is ever new. But a great film proves that statement false, because just as no two retinas are the same it is just as true that no two pairs of eyes can see something in the same way. A great film proves there is always something in our lives and in our world that has never been uncovered. And a great artist, regardless of the medium he or she chooses to express it, is the only one among us who can reveal that secret to us.
