Behind the bar at Fremont's Buckaroo Tavern you’ll notice a nut bar, a record player and Hans, a man of a bartender if ever there was one. Hans can recommend a beer based on what region you hail from, if you can't make up your mind on your own. This is precisely the type of expertise you’d expect from a bar that’s been going strong since 1938. After all these years, the Buckaroo "K-9" Tavern is still a popular watering hole for neighborhood regulars, hogs, and allegedly, dogs.

 

Is it actually a dog-friendly bar, or is that sign a joke?
That sign is a type of memorial to a dog named Odie. Odie’s owner used to bartend here, and even after he quit and moved across the city, the dog would somehow find his way over 100 city blocks and come back for the beef jerky. So they put that "K-9 Bar" plaque up after Odie died.

What other kinds of clientele do you see in here?
Well, back in the '70s this was hog city, but it got gentrified and changed the flavor of the neighborhood. During the winter it’s more of a neighborhood joint, but when the weather gets warmer everybody’ll ride their bikes more.

Do you know what inspired the cowboy-themed décor?
No, but it’s been in a bunch of music videos and movies.

You know Ray Charles passed away today? I’ve been going with brother Ray every couple of hours at least. Actually, this place usually rocks… I’m trying to drive people out of here with my Ray Charles tribute. But I mean, this is the man who wrote "Everybody Must Get Stoned." Bob Dylan didn’t write it—RAY CHARLES wrote it! And I once heard him say in an interview, "I haven’t written a good song since I was on heroin in the '50s"!
