Ok. So I have to admit publicly I’m just a tad jealous. Who, Sylvia? Yes, me!
I first heard rumors that Steve Wells was bringing back “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” to Re-bar a few months ago and my first thought was, didn’t that play out till it was dead the first time? I was also a little miffed I would have to wait a little bit longer for my hit show, “Pho Bang” to run because of “Hedwig”’s now extensive run. So then Steve called and personally invited me down. It was a party invitation I could not pass up. Now, kids I saw this play five times the first time it came around. I’ve also seen the DVD, the making of the movie and watched it in the movie theater at least four times. I do prefer it live.
So I went early. One of my friends was visiting me from Vancouver and was also a big fan of “Hedwig” and so I thought this would be a perfect touch to Saturday night. We arrived at 6pm and the line was already starting up. The excitement started to build as taxi after taxi pulled up, letting out more and more fabulous people, dressed to the nines in fun outfits. They entered into the crowd of bridge and tunnel “straights” that were there to see the freak show. I felt like an aged Magenta at a regular midnight showing of “Rocky Horror,” and I knew all the words—or at least I thought.
So we entered Re-bar and grabbed our seats quick. Show starts at 8pm but by 7:30 there were no more seats. It was standing room only. The show started up with familiar songs. But, wait, this time the sound was better. The lighting was amazing and much more intense. The singers’ voices were fresh and strong. Bhama Roget is downright amazing. This show is very demanding and she really grabbed her numbers by the balls and made me really feel it.
Then there was Nick Garrison. I think he is probably the hardest working little singer/actor/comedienne around. Damn him! It seems these days everything worthwhile to see stars Nick Garrison. He is here, there, everywhere. Bitch! I have to admit I wish I had the range and talent that this man has. He is a major player in this minor town. If you haven’t seen him, I’d do it soon before he gets taken off to somewhere else.
So I went in knowing that he could do it. I’ve seen it before, hell five times! But it’s like Imogen Love took what they did before and turned up the volume. The new band kicks ass and they all have amazing asses! Costumes are stripped down to perfection and the entire production really comes off very well. The new “Hedwig” really blew me away. So kids, go see this show. You will be glad you did.
“Hedwig and the Angry Inch” runs at the Re-bar through August. Call 206.233.9873 or rebarseattle.com.
