See
BIKE ART —Portland is the site of many interesting public art pieces. Our favorite
is located near the divine Reading Frenzy shop and consists of bikes stacked up on top of one another. It's much better than the ugly-ass sculpture piece across the street.

Rock
FLUTES NOT GUITARS —Prog rock is making a comeback, except this time they're not playing any flutes. NYC's Oneida will show you how it's done right with their fast, intricate and intense music that's coming to town. Catch them live at the Hideaway in Seattle August 4, and at Berbati's Pan in Portland August 5.

NO COUCH POTATOES —From August 4-8, the Old Firehouse in Redmond will host DIY workshops on everything from self-defense to yoga, zine making and car or bike repair. Entitled "Get Off the Couch!," the event is the perfect anecdote to sitting at home and doing nothing. For more on the event, visit

Activate NO WIN '04 —If you can't get to New York City to protest the anointment of Bush for a second term, you can still have your say. Local peace groups are sending Seattle residents to NYC to protest, and volunteers are needed to help make this trip happen. More locally, there are plans in the works for a protest event in Seattle, although details are not firm at the time of this writing. To get involved in either of these avenues of protesting the Bush agenda, contact Not in Our Name at seattle@notinourname.net or visit notinourname-seattle.net.

Wear
SPANGLEMAKER —Looks like sequins are going to be everywhere this autumn, from cute little jackets to handbags and embroidered coats! Team a cute spangled cardigan with an old rock tee and your favorite jeans, or spruce up any outfit with sequined flats or a customized beaded tote bag. Not just for hideous Christmas sweaters anymore, the flashy little circles of shine will be everywhere. Time to get fancy!

Surf CHICKEN TONIGHT —Though it was created by Burger King as a viral marketing campaign, one of the funniest and most bizarre websites we've found is subservientchicken.com. The concept is simple: you punch in something for the guy in the chicken suit and a garter belt to do (for instance, hop on one leg) and, lo and behold, the chicken does it. Be warned: if you ask the chicken to do anything naughty, he'll come right up to the screen and shame you.
