I thought the movie was delightful. I had read The New Yorker review and thought it missed the point of the movie. But I've also just looked at several online reviews and I've yet to see one point out that the movie's message was embodied in the Jefferson Airplane song. Didn't anyone notice that the rabbi at the end was quoting the song to Danny? When God brings us nothing but tsuris, all we have to depend on is our loved ones. I thought it was a very touching movie.

I beg to differ. The New Yorker review http://www.newyorker.com/arts/reviews/film/a_serious_man_coen with the phrases "hell to sit through" and "insufferable" gets it right about this ugly avalanche of cliches and caricatures.
