I read the YA book Fridrich as an adult and it gave me nightmares. I read it to see if it was appropriate for the 6th graders that I was teaching. Obviously, I chose not to suggest it to them.

We children of the late 1950s were similarly fascinated, especially since our parents and teachers didn’t discuss the Holocaust — nor was it called that at the time. But we knew adults with blue numbers on their arms — some were other kids’ parents — and even the modest library at The Synagogue of Israel in Wheeling, West Virginia nonetheless had many of the books that are still the most-read Holocaust memoirs.

I have a particular issue with the new-ish phenomenon of picture books that “gently” introduce the holocaust to young children. Can’t we give a few years enjoying being Jewish before introducing them to contemporary anti-semitism? (Agreed, there’s not much we can do about the Torah….)
