Carl Post says: "It’s too bad that ignorant Ashkenazim don’t appreciate the Sephardim; nor do they understand them."

Hey, Carl, I am an Ashkenazi Jew and I know a lot about Spharadim and can even understand Ladino. So who are you talking about, pray tell?

"my point is to clarify that yehudah ha-levi did indeed have a strong regard for the importance and holiness of the eretz yisroel, but he did not concurrently hold beliefs about mass jewish immigration thence and the establishment of jewish cultural and/or political centers there, which are necessary to a zionist platform."

and your proof?

Halevi's writing bespeak a deep longing for the land of Israel. He expressed himself as did most poets in his day in metaphoric language. About this "invisible Hand" knows nothing about.

People should read On The Sea:

http://www.amazon.com/Sea-Yehuda-Halevi/dp/9659012438

You should be able to find a copy in a good academic library.

i don't think an appreciation for the land of israel makes anyone a zionist of any stripe.
rebbe nachman made a famous pilgrimage to the land, yet his grave marks a significant place in the depths of golus. indeed, its very significance lies in its holiness amidst the exile.
a more recent example can be found in certain contemporary settlers who are losing faith in the israeli political entity and only wish to live in the land, no matter who runs it, such as rabbi froman.

my opinion on such matters is beyond the scope of this response. rather, my point is to clarify that yehudah ha-levi did indeed have a strong regard for the importance and holiness of the eretz yisroel, but he did not concurrently hold beliefs about mass jewish immigration thence and the establishment of jewish cultural and/or political centers there, which are necessary to a zionist platform.

Please note that the name of the famous religious philosopher Emil Fackenheim was misspelled in you letter. Otherwise I do agree invoking his name and work / he was truly relevant in the post-Holocaust world mending it in an inspired and religious way.

HaLevi has a unique "proof' for the historicity of the giving of the Torah... As Isaak Heinemann writes in his Introduction to the Kuzari Jerusalem 1946 “The fact of revelation, recognized in ancient times and in their own day, is the proof of the belief in God.” ... This historical phenomenon of religion.

Has anyone made the connection between Halevi and Emile Fakenhiem?

Fakenhiem’s philosophy of Judaism for modern man is captured in his famous lecture: God’s Presence in History, where he stands Judah HaLevi’s proof on it’s head. For Halevi, the unbroken memory of revelation proves that revelation occurred. For Fakenhiem, Jewish history itself becomes that revelation. For Fakenheim, Jewish history is no longer a fact, it is an act, it is a commandment. It is in living Jewish history that God is revealed. God may or may not have been revealed at Sinai, but he most definitely is revealed in the history of a people who carries the tradition of revelation. Fakenheim’s most famous statement was that continuing Jewish life and denying Hitler a posthumous victory was the 614th commandment.

The history of the Jews is the most interesting story ever told. It's too bad that ignorant Ashkenazim don't appreciate the Sephardim; nor do they understand them. Many years ago, our Oceanside synagogue questioned the religion of my future daughter-in-law because her maiden name was Ferrara. As far as they understood, if the name "sounded" Christian to them, then the bearer probably wasn't Jewish. They would never question the name "Rosenberg" although one bearer of that surname murdered millions of Jews.
