I, too, attended that concert at the Sixth Street Synagogue and was moved, charmed and exhilarated. I’d like to add, too, that out here in the North Jersey ‘burbs from which I schlepped to catch the JPPC, we have a community chorus, Kol Dodi, that sings fairly complex arrangements of English, Hebrew and yes, Yiddish works. This year we borrowed one, Vasserl, from Binyumen Schaechter, and also learned Bokser Boim, a song that Israel’s Chava Albershtein has recorded and sang to a pretty packed house at a Folksbeine gala at Lincoln Center this month. (Plus Partizaner Lid, of course.) Lomir ale zingen veiter!

Yiddish is not in trouble.

It is spoken by several hundred thousand people in the US, Israel, Europe and elsewhere and has more newspapers (three weeklies and many others) in the United States than Hebrew ever will.

There are thousands of children being born for whom Yiddish will be their native language.

This language will simply not die.
