An illustrated remembrance of cartooning legend Harvey Pekar
“Very recently, Jeff Newelt, editor of the Pekar Project on Smithmag.net, let me draw a story with Harvey.” >>
Vanessa Davis' most recent book, Make Me a Woman, includes many comic strips first published in Tablet Magazine. Her first collection of diary comics, Spaniel Rage, was published in 2005.
Funnymen, radicals, and a merry widow
very nice work, a warm remembrance
i really liked this. the seemingly laid-back voice, the details of the drawings…the peek at pekar’s softer side.
This is so beautiful and inspiring. I once met Harvey Pekar at a comic event in Williamsburg. I inadvertantly stole his seat and he seemed relieved, as if he didn’t deserve it.
Nicely done, especially moving back and forth between black/white and color.
More than anything, I now need to dig out my issues of True Swamp.
Very nice, Vanessa. I like you’re drawing of him on page 2, panel 6. Beautiful strip.
A nice tribute … I enjoyed it very much.
Thanks for doing this Vanessa! It was great… I really dug Harvey’s stuff, especially his newer stuff like the Vietnam War book and Ego&Hubris. I totally remember that issue of American Splendor, I think I have it!
This is beautiful, Vanessa! Warms my heart to see a comic by you involving Harvey. I LOVE how you wrote that you knew the grumpiness came from ‘the truly tender hearted’. You are amazing.
Toby Radloff’s video farewell to Harvey:
Very touching, Vanessa. Got to admit the passing of “famous folks” rarely touches me but Harvey left me quite upset. The guy was one of a kind and your strip is a fitting tribute. Felt good to read it and realise I’m not the only person to hold him in such regard.
Very Nice. I avoid obits as a rule too, but this one is obviously very special to you and it shows. It made me wistful, and you are an artist. Thank you Vanessa.
