Akiva was martyred because he refused to stop studying/teaching Torah. I don’t think that one can extrapolate present-day politics from what we currently know of his life; but it seems fair to say that the Rosh la-Chachamim would not be in favor of solving the federal budget deficit by ignoring needs of the poor and elderly while cutting taxes on the wealthy and corporations.
