Martin: Yom Kippur is a holiday of joy. It is not supposed to be sad and it is definitely NOT sinful to look forward to it. A great article:

I suggest reading the poetry of I Came So far for Beauty by Leonard Cohen. Not quite as bleak as The Future. More about creativity, striving, but not always getting it right. Jennifer Warnes does the best achingly beautiful rendition of this song.

After a very tumultuous year, I've been looking forward to Yom Kippur and the quiet and contemplation it brings. Now I'm wondering if looking forward to YK is sinful>

Besides Kol Nidre you might want to listen on both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur the rendition of Avinu Malkeinu by Barbra Streisand.

As one who converted to the Jewish Faith, even though I did complete the 'Conversion Class' and go through the ritual of the Mikveh, I am sure there is much that I still do not know. I rely very heavily on my Rabbi, my friend Martin Katz, the Torah and this paper to fill me in on what I do not know.

Many thanks and keep up the great work!

Kol Nidre, thrilling? If Yom Kippur tefillah has a high point, it's the Mussaf Amidah.

Just came across this article, sorry so far behind. The problem with traditions are they get in the way of the truth sometimes. Of the two goats one (if the lot fell on him) was to be offered as a sin offering, the other as a scapegoat who was to be set free into the wilderness.

They weren't even in Jerusalem when the procedures were set in place so it would be rather difficult for the one (scapegoat) to be pushed off a cliff near Jerusalem.

Also Aaron was to wash (once) with water prior to putting on the holy garments before entering the Holy of Holies there to sprinkle the blood of the sin offering on the Mercy Seat. Upon leaving he was to take off the holy garments (leaving them there) and wash again.

Leviticus 16 explains the whole thing simply and clearly.
