Wow, Marjorie. You made some pretty snide comments towards the end of the article. Maybe being subjected to portrayals of women as castrating bitches made you adopt the tone of a castrating bitch. You might want to consider that there’s a subtle dance going on here (as always) between the men and the women.In psychoanalytic theory, it’s called “projective identification,” where someone identifies and acts out the unconscious projections of someone else.

Thanks for the article. I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed! Unlike the Superbowl ads, the Olympics ads are thoughtful and family friendly. I’m letting my kids watch the Olympics ads where the Superbowl ones made me feel so bad we paused the live game, let some time pass, continued to watch the game while skipping over the commercials. Perhaps the cynicism in advertising fails to take in account that there are actually intelligent people out there, whose conscious reason and wholesome spiritual center trumps the subconscious lout/loutess they try to reach in their ads.
My wife watches football, on t.v. and live; she came to love the sport as a high school coach’s wife/player’s mom. So the family would “be together” on Friday nights/Saturday afternoons, she volunteered to be part of the yardline chain-crew (breaking gender ground in the process), thereby getting a close experience of all aspects of the sport. She would even check out my scouting report so she could anticipate the other team’s strategy at game time. My two skinny scholar sons managed to make the team; my cheerleader-despising daughter was a four-year “water-girl,” highly respected and appreciated by her player-classmates.
We have as a family watched both the Super Bowl and the Olympics for the sport and for the human interest story, commercials be d—ed.
