This design is steller! You definitely know how to keep a reader amused. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost...HaHa!) Wonderful job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!

It is a good article but not true. I joined the Ghetto Brothers after running into Benjy and Maylin after karate class on Trinity Avenue, Maylin's father washed shirts next to P.S 51 in the Bronx. Benjy popped out and asked me to join up with his club, he lured me in with talk of Maylin's father cleaning up a Shaolin Temple in China. I met some great men however Benjy and family were Pentecostals who slapped tambourines and went to a tiny basement church to praise. Yet the boys in the band wanted more, the Beatles just came to America and they could sing! Finally the family got together and got the "Outlaw Look" elected a conga player and another musician and the Ghetto Brothers were a real street gang.

I loved the article and found it fascinating. However, I agree with others who hated the response to Benjy's question. Sadly in a great article about connection to Jewish faith, you ended by providing a biased anti- Israel response. Ironically, the factors that caused Benjy's ancestors to convert are the same factors that make others despise Israel's existence and support the Palestinians in their ongoing promotion of a culture of hatred. You missed a wonderful opportunity, but still a great article.

It seems to me that maintaining Converso "ritual and practice" when the motivation for it has long passed is a form of self-hatred; at best an addiction to form over substance startlingly similar to the emergence and of "forms" of Judaism less than Orthodox sans overt persecution.
Can't live with it, can't live without it?
Lip service to two conflicting ideologies?
In time such an attitude yields to the ability to live without it. Guaranteed.
However, the article "was" an orthodox People Magazine treatment of her subject and issues involved: a lip service treatment signifying nothing.

Norman, Marrano culture is totally different from Sephardic culture. Marranos were 'hidden' Jews who practiced some Jewish observances in secret while still outwardly maintaining and espousing Christian beliefs and practices. Sephardim proudly maintained their Judaism, Jewish practices and Jewish identity which is why there exists no halachic question about the Jewish status of Sephardim.

I am not saying that there aren't very legitimate reasons for the first four respondents comments, but after all this is a piece about growing up in "Da Bronks", not about the conflict between Israel and the Muslim communities.
I thought the article was enlightening. I learned more about Jewish Sephardic culture, and the history of the The Bronx.

"......Well,” I hedge before settling on an analogy I knew he’d understand. “I guess it’s like it was back in the gang days in the South Bronx. Everyone saw you guys as thugs, never for a second considering the social context—the dilapidated housing, the bad schools, the poverty. I’m not saying the situation in Israel is exactly like that, but there are legitimate grievances on both sides.”...."

Hey Dvora,

It is NOT like that. The analogy you gave is not an analogy! You jumped on that bandwagon of senseless moral equivalences which abound and confuse the real issues.

The Arabs who call themselves Palestinians received billions of dollars in aid! How can it make sense they are in poverty?

The insolvency of the conflict arises from facts being ignored! There has never been a people or culture called Palestinians so Arabs posing as Palestinians cannot have a claim for self-determination. It's a ploy! Palestine is a real misnomer for the land in question. What the world is trying to do is make a 23rd Arab state in Jewish land as a weapon against Israel.

It is really not at all like gang violence in neighborhoods. The Chessboard is so different.

You had an opportunity to enlighten Benjy Melendez but instead you just helped him identify with a gang which is held together by desires to exterminate Jewish people. Why would you do something like that?
Why can't you be a real Jewish leader? Dammit.
