I have requested my local library to order Mr. Berman’s latest book, have read “Tablet’s” interview and have downloaded his “New Republic” article. So, I plead a real shallowness of knowledge and understanding of this specific.

However, without throwing “-ist” bomb words, we all should recall how many friendly-faces and -voices have misrepresented dangers in the past.

Some years ago, not long after the 7/7 London tube bombings, I attended a Muslim city circle event in Central London where Tariq Ramadan was the speaker. He appeared to be promoting a soft deep Islam with a timeless transformative appeal beyond “savage” literalist textual interpretation. What he seemed to be saying was that below the Koranic surface text was a deeper more beautiful diamond of truth that could be applied to our new century. The audience was 90% Muslim and there were a few ignorant hothead shouty second generation British Muslim rude-boy types that one typically comes across at anti-war and Free Palestine rallies. He was patient with these guys but insisted they were mistaken. Ramadan (unusual name for a Muslim) came across as gentle and charming. This is pure impression and anecdotal as I have not read his books or articles. Either he is peaceful and sincere (the impression I got), or he is a dissimulator and practitioner of Islamic Takiya par excellence. Perhaps I should read some of his material and revisit this discussion in that light.

Interesting interview.

It’s worth noting that the Obama administration has gone so far to deny the threat from jihadism that the official Pentagon report on Major Hassan doesn’t even mention his religious motives. Pathetic.

We can’t defeat our enemies if we won’t even listen to what they are saying; let alone understand them. It’s also worth noting that the Obama administration initially indicted support for a UN ban on “religious heresy”. Let’s be clear about the many dangers from Islamic religious fanaticism – and stop pretending that ideology has nothing to do with 9/11.

A good article, but one that also avoids going the final step to the truth. The case the author makes, that the vast diversity in Muslim experiences, habits, ethnicities, and locations proves there is no Umma is incorrect. And worse: To assume “a bias” on the part of Westerners who accept Islam’s own description of its diaspora, is to impose yet a further accusation of false guilt on our society (ie their victims)! There is one element that unites – or CAN unite – Muslims in lock step at any time, in the tick of an eye is this: The call of the Koran and Shariah “in danger”. To understand this, the author should ask a Danish cartoonist, the Russians, or the embattled Dutch about this. In other words, it’s their comprehensive political ideology masking as a religion that must always reject democracy, with its multitude of freedoms.

It kills me, a bona fide liberal, that so many of today’s liberals have sided with societies in which they would not last for two seconds. Their hypocrisy makes me ill. They should, for example, discuss equal rights for women and gays with anybody in Hamas leadership; I dare them.

The Muslim world does exist, at least to the degree that it is united by anti-Zionism. There seems to be near unanimity on that issue, and the intensity of feeling is extreme.
