This article is factually correct in its assertion that most Jews are not, and never were, part of the mainstream New Orleans elite. In general though I would not attribute this to anti-semitism. New Orleans, like the rest of the old south, is steadfast in its conservatism; newcomers are outsiders and tradition is held in the highest regard. Most Jews in New Orleans are from other places or were born to parents from other places. New arrivals from the north or even elsewhere in the south, are by no means automatically received in elite circles in New Orleans. It usually takes a few generations for that to occur. Older Jewish families in New Orleans are in fact members of the various clubs and organizations described in the article, and are highly respected. This was true even in 1968. Today, even some Jews who are relatively new to the city are welcomed in these circles as long as they “fit in.” This attitude may be shocking to some, but imagine gentiles in New York claiming that exclusive Jewish Clubs there were anti – gentile. A lot of people forge bonds easily with those that are from similar backgrounds simply because they are familiar. It has nothing to do with dislike of a particular religion or ethnicity. This is especially true in New Orleans where religion and ethnicity are seen as almost meaningless since New Orleans has such a strong culture of its own and has always been very secular.

In response to Emet’s claim about Krewe du Jieux’s making fun of Hasidic Jews “year after year,” it simply is not true.

In 2009, for example, the Krewe’s theme was “Barack Mitzvah,” a celebration of both the KdJ Bar Mitzvah year and Obama’s election. There was no reference to Hasidim in any of this.

The 2010 theme, “Ha-seeds of Change,” was chosen because, as part of an inner krewe of Krewe Delusion, KdJ had to fit into Delusion’s theme, “Seeds of Revolution.” Puns play a large part in most carnival krewes.

I would like to thank Justin Vogt and Tablet Magazine, for publishing this thoughtful and well-researched article.

I have hesitated to dignify Emet’s response, but I have concluded that I must reply to the disparaging remarks above (Tablet Magazine cannot remove the posting because of its editorial policy).

I feel I must set the record straight, and I want to do it today because I am about to become a father. It is heartbreaking for me to think that my child might someday see comments online like Emet’s without reading the truth about what really happened.

The charges that Emet refers to in the Times Picayune article were Refused by the District Attorney. The woman confessed in writing that she had made a false claim. This untrue false sensationalism has caused tremendous embarrassment for my loved ones and myself, and I have been repeatedly told by my friends in the community, “it could have happened to any of us.”

While I obviously favor free speech and freedom of the press, I cannot convey the damage that it has done to have information about me falsely reported and yet have no way to remove such reckless articles and cruel comments from the public domain.

Fortunately, remarks such as these have not stopped Krewe du Jieux from pursuing its holy mission. I am honored by the love and hard work that hundreds of people have put into Krewe du Jieux over the years, and grateful for the faith they have shown in me and in our shared goals.

True that Mardi Gras is a Catholic Holiday, but only after they co-opted an ancient festival that allowed the working class to let it all hang out for a day. But then, the same thing was done with the ancient Solstice Festival (now Xmas) or the music John Browns Body (Onward Xian Soldiers).
Also, when the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered they were given to the leading biblical language expert, John Allergo, to translate. He was discredited after reporting back that there was actually no such person as Jesus Christ, just double entendres used by jews to get letters past the roman censors. So how could anyone possibly kill a double entendre?

My father was a member of the Krewe of Hermes and my uncle was a member of Rex. Another Uncle was in Zeus. These were quality organizations in the 60′s and 70′s. Who cares what the Boston Club and Pickwick Club do (i.e., Momus, Comus, and Proteus)? By the late 60′s we Jews along with Catholic friends created Carnival clubs that superseded anything the Old Guard put on the streets and that was a source of great pride for us. And we loved our African-American citizens making fun of Rex. There were always persons who hated us and you knew who they were. My sister went to high school with David Duke. But we Jews stuck together and were (and are) proud of our heritage and contributions to New Orleans.

One thing is clear, the culture of Lousiana is very complex and cannot be explained away easily, comparing it to others. I think it takes inside knowledge and open-mindedness. However, someone’s statement “Still, I don’t know why Jews need to be involved in everything” is absolutely ridiculous. Imagine a Jewish world with a gentile minority and the question is raised, “Still, I don’t know why ‘gentiles’ need to be involved in everything.” Sometimes, you gotta plug yourself into the equation and test it out.

“The Krewes and the Jews” article really interested me, a born-and-raised-love-Carnival-Jewish New Orleanian. I learned early on that Jews were not allowed to join Rex and Comus and Momus, and Jews could not lunch at the Orleans Club on Canal Street, the favorite spot for Rex and his co-horts. But that did not stop me and my Jewish friends from attending parades and catching Carnival beads and trinkets and doubloons from all the krewes.
On a personal note, my father, Ralph Pressner, opened Pressner’s Carnival Mart with his Italian partner, became the largest, local, successful retailer of Carnival merrchandise in the City in the 50′s and 60′s. We were very openly Jewish, very involved in our Orthodox synagogue, and the customers included members of the Krewes of Rex, Comus and Momus!!!
Also, some of the newer Krewes, like Carrollton and Mid-City, organized following World War 11, were open to ALL–Jews, Italians and
Christians. In fact, my sister and I were maids in the Ball of the Krewe of Carrolton. The efforts to make them inter-ratial came later, and have been marginally succussful.

I thought Goldstein was thrown out of Krew du Jieux because he was being offensive to the members of the krewe who didn’t do everything he said to do exactly the way he wanted. It was never about breaking stereotypes it was just about Goldstein’s ego. The krewe changed its name to Mishegas because of constant threats of lawsuits from Goldstein and because it didn’t want to be associated with him any longer. Getting the two krews back together is impossible because many female members refuse to march with Goldstein after attempted rape charges were made against him in 2008.

It’s too bad the reporter never discussed that and seemed to just talk to Goldstein. Watching Jieux making fun of Hasidic jews year after year is just tiring and doesn’t say any of the things Goldstein’s rhetoric implies.

Voting for mishigas is just getting in line with the “don’t rock the boat” ethos–krewe du jieux doesn’t use headless women/mistress imagery to make people think about pussy and tits. Krewe du jieux appropriates images of antisemitism to make people think harder about race and class and it the krewe has a good time doing so. It is still about “laissez les bons temps rouler”.

What is described in N.O. is the classical “Gentleman’s Agreement” form of anti-semitism, focused through an unusual lens–a city with a unique French Catholic/ Old South heritage. It is not surprising to find that local Jews were practically complicit in the arrangement, adopting an ethos of “Don’t rock the boat”. Such is commonplace in communities with insecure identities, to deal with underlying hostility by simply pretending it’s not there. I can’t be sure the Jieux’s really make the contribution they aspire to, but I love New Orleans and would vote for Mishegas and letting Les Bonne Temps Roulez.

I think Jews being involved in Mardi Gras is actually part of the satirical nature of the krewe. Mardi Gras originally poked fun at everything and everyone; this is a valid expression of that aspect of the holiday, in a beautifully twisted way.

Beautifully twisted is what downtown Mardi Gras is all about; it no longer has much to do with Lent.

Yes, Mardi Gras is a Catholic holiday, but the the idea that “your people killed our Lord?” isn’t something that the Catholic Church still holds to be true.

As a Jewish newcomer, I spent my first Mardi Gras parade (this year) watching from an observation stand set up at a local synagogue holding a Shabbati Gras party. I find the Jewish community’s connection to Mardi Gras and local culture fascinating; I could read and listen to stories about New Orleans/ Mardi Gras/ the Jewish community all day and not get tired of them.

Having lived in New Orleans in Metairie in the early 1960′s,I find the advent of these Krewes most enlightening.During that period there were many of the prominent Jews in town participating. However masked and not recognizable.

From a personal observation, and not being of the elite,my own observations are somewhat different! We were able to maintain refreshment stands along the parade route whose sole purpose was to provide funds for the newly formed Jewish Day School.The Mayor of New Orleans appeared in newspaper articles with a Jewish
Women’s Hadassah Group.

In conclusion we were asked to join a newly formed Krewe that was being formed in what you might call Old Metairie, despite our religious preference. So all was not gloom and doom!

The Jewih People have always found humor in their many trials and tribulations,so it can be fully understood That the N.O. groups would have such people making fun, rather than sadness!

I am surprised that Justin Vogt doesn’t understand that Mardi Gras is a festival deliberately designed to precede Easter, a Christian religious holiday. Putting it simply,it is a Goyishe holiday. Of course Jews were not invited.
