‘District Diva’ Mindy Meyer Wants Your Vote
The 22-year-old Orthodox Jewish law student running for New York Senate
How does Mindy Meyer, the 22-year-old New York State Senate Republican candidate, hope to engage young voters? “Did you see my website?” she asks over the phone, her call waiting beeping non-stop.
The Orthodox Jewish law student, who says she is the youngest person in her class at Touro Law, made a splash with her hot pink, GIF-enabled campaign website, which features a running loop of LMFAO’s “Sexy and I Know It”—an accompaniment to her slogan, “I’m Senator and I Know It”—and a picture of her dressed as Katniss from the Hunger Games (“No more ‘Hunger Games’ in our District!”).
Meyer grew up in Brooklyn, where she attended Prospect Park yeshiva before spending a year in Israel and then majoring in politics at Touro College. “Politics is so corrupt nowadays,” she says. “Because I’m religious, I use my values as a compass.” A lifelong interest in politics, bolstered by a chance meeting with Rudy Giuliani at age 12, led Meyer to law school—she completed her first year of classes and is currently a judicial intern at the Kings County Supreme Court—and now, to the New York State Senate race.
Meyer’s platform is somewhat vague, centering around issues like stop and frisk policies (“The NYPD’s stop-and-frisk practices raise serious concerns over racial profiling, illegal stops and privacy rights. However, when used appropriately a stop and frisk can help to protect the public against potential harm”) and crime (“Mindy intends to crack down on crime”), though she advocates for school choice and supports restoring funding to summer youth employment programs.
She’s critical of her opponent, Democrat incumbent Kevin Parker, saying, “He’s like the senator who cried wolf; the senator who cried change.”
Brooklyn’s Conservative Party chairman Jerry Kassar seemed pleased with the attention, however fleeting, Meyer is getting, telling the New York Post, “She’s a law-school student, she’s extremely intelligent, she is very focused on this race, and I’m excited to have a candidate who’s getting all this attention!”
Though her claim of being “the first young woman in the history of New York to run for New York State Senate” has come under some scrutiny, Meyer has certainly brought some energy (and sparkly GIFs) into the race. “We need to get younger people involved,” she says. “I want to show them politics can be exciting.”
