Report: Chuck Hagel for Defense Secretary

The former senator has been a lightning rod for criticism

The Cable’s Josh Rogin, who reliably does great work, reports that after seemingly endless weeks of speculation, former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel is expected to be named as Leon Panetta’s replacement for secretary of defense.

White House officials and sources close to Hagel declined to confirm to The Cable that Hagel is the president’s choice to be the replace Leon Panetta at the helm of the Pentagon, but several sources close to the process said have told The Cable that the White House and Hagel have been in touch on a regular basis and that Hagel is indeed the expected pick. Decisions about the timing and logistics of the announcement are being finalized now.

Speculation about Hagel’s nomination has inspired a maddening collection of responses from charges of Hagel’s anti-Semitism and anti-gay remarks to criticism of his positions on Israel and more comprehensive doubts about his temperament and ability to manage.

Hagel has also earned plaudits high-profile supporters too, including long-time ambassador Ryan Crocker and former colleagues from around the Beltway. Others called on President Obama to avoid letting Israel be the issue that derail Hagel’s nomination.

Should President Obama tap him, we should expect a contentious nomination process.

Looks like, Obama is showing his strength to his opponents and basically to the Israeli lobbies around the globe. Hope, he will succeed and place his name in the great, daring and mightiest American President. If he will bogged down, during the process, he will be considered as the timid President, Who has no guts to stand-up to the Israeli puppets in the Congress and Senate.

C’mon!

ALL of Obama’s nominees are going to be ‘contentious’.

This says less about Hagel than it does about his former Republican colleagues.

Pam Green says:

So you really are an anti-Semitic troll! I wasn’t sure!

pkbrandon says:

No, I’m one hundred percent Semite, and we’re known for disagreeing.
What about you.

Pam Green says:

If there’s a coherence problem, it’s yours. Perhaps you were intentionally incoherent or ambiguous. Anyone who knows Hagel’s history on Middle Eastern issues (and who does not, at this point?) would have to be anti-Semitic to say that the problem isn’t Hagel but his Republican colleagues. If you had a point worth making, you should have made it clear instead of striving to be provocative.

CygnusA81 says:

Obama is going to nominate a gay hating and Jew hating RINO from Nebraska to be SecDef. Good job liberal Jews! With this nomination Iran now knows it has nothing to fear in making the bomb. Even better for them, if Hagel becomes SecDef, Iran will know that the US will do all it can to stop Israel from stopping Iran getting the bomb rather then stopping Iran from getting the bomb. Sick world we are living.

pkbrandon says:

Your posts make my point better than I could.

Pam Green says:

I have no idea what you mean. I think you should clarify your obfuscating remarks.
