• Nearly 700 rabbis and Jewish communal officers participated in a White House conference call briefing on Syria, which rabbis said would better prepare them to discuss the issue on Yom Kippur. [Jerusalem Post]

• Bibi took a page from Hillel, who famously said “If I am not for myself, who will be for me?” while referencing Syria and Iran, concluding that Israel had no one to rely on but itself when facing enemy threats. [Times of Israel]

• Good news, Breaking Bad fans. Scheming lawyer Saul Goodman, who changed his name to sound more, er, lawyerly, is getting his own spinoff, Better Call Saul. [Variety]

• The sale of Israeli app company Waze to Google for more than $1 billion is helping Israeli charities, too, with proceeds of nearly $1.5 million in stock options going to five Israel charities. [JTA]

• English football’s governing body has ruled that the use of the word “Yid” at games is inappropriate, and could result in criminal charges. [JTA]

• The Foundation for Jewish Culture, a New York-based charity that supports artists, filmmakers, and scholars, has announced plans to shut down in 2014, distributing its considerable assets among the organization’s projects. [Forward]
