New season, new looks.

For starters, everyone’s favorite Scroll editor, Stephanie Butnick, is being promoted to deputy editor of the magazine. You may notice more feature stories on cats and Drake.

Second, we’re very excited to announce that Jonathan Zalman will be joining Tablet as a staff editor. He’ll run the Scroll, our National Magazine Award-winning news blog.

Jonathan has been contributing to Tablet since 2013, writing about Bobby Fischer and the Lubavitcher Rebbe, indie crossword king Ben Tausig, and filmmaker Davy Rothbart’s documentary about the losingest high-school basketball team in Indiana. We’re looking forward to having Jonathan’s keen eye and sharp reporting skills at the helm of the Scroll.

Jonathan is also a regular contributor to the Wall Street Journal’s sports section, where he covers chess, and has written for ESPN and The Economist (You can check out his full archive here). He currently teaches journalism and media courses at Fordham University. Jonathan earned a bachelor’s degree in communication and rhetoric studies from Syracuse University, and a master’s degree in media culture and communication from NYU.

Please join me in welcoming Jonathan Zalman to the Tablet team. You can reach him directly at [email protected] with tips, pitches, or compliments.

Alana Newhouse is the editor-in-chief of Tablet Magazine.
