There’s a Beastie Boys-Inspired Pilot in the New Star Wars Movie

Star Wars: The Force Awakens—the seventh movie created out of what happened when George Lucas wrote down what happened that one time he took acid while reading The Berenstain Bears—will now undoubtedly be the most Jewish Star Wars yet.

The facts: Star Wars: The Force Awakens will premiere on December 18, just four days after Hanukkah ends this year; it’s directed by J.J. Abrams, an L.A. Jew who brings his kids to High Holiday services, and whose first initials stand for “Jeffrey Jacob”; and Abrams, it turns out, is a big Beastie Boys (Brooklyn Jews) fan who even included their hit “Sabotage” in his 2012 Star Trek flick (an homage of sorts to Adam Yauch, who died that year). And now, Abrams is apparently continuing in the tradition of including a shout-out to Mike D, MCA, and Ad-Rock in the new Star Wars film.

Earlier this month, an image of a Hasbro Star Wars toy was released, featuring an Ello Atsy, “a skilled if occasionally reckless X-wing starfighter pilot for the Resistance.” Ello Atsy could be interpreted as a play on The Beastie Boys’ 1998 album, Hello Nasty, which features the song “Intergalactic.” What’s more is that Ello Atsy’s helmet apparently reads “Born to Ill” in Aurebush, a fictional Star Wars language (that totally looks like Hebrew).
