A Buzzworthy ‘Jeopardy!’ Champ

I don’t watch Jeopardy! much these days, but only because I don’t pay for cable—and really, who does? Old people do, because they’re smart and not cheap like the rest of us cord-cutting, Internet idiots, who don’t deserve to bask in the intellectual glory of one of the greatest game shows of all time every evening around 7 p.m.

And really, that’s the dream, isn’t it? Dinners at 3 p.m., long naps after that, then Jeopardy! before bed. Then it’s the early bird special and back at it again.

Anyway, for those of us who’ve not been tuning in to Jeopardy! lately, a guy named Austin “Buzzy” Cohen has been tearing it up on the program—since last Monday he’s racked up over $140k during his 8-show win streak—while forming a bit of a bromance with host Alex Trebek, formerly of mustache fame. Here’s a clip of some Buzzy highlights from the first five days of his run.

Apparently, Buzzy has created two camps: those who love him (and kinda wanna marry him) and those who hate him. To the haters, I say, hate on haters. In all likelihood you’re just jelly of his glasses and the duckets that are soon to be entering his bank account, after the government gets its share, of course.

According to The Record, a newspaper that serves North New Jersey, Cohen, 31, used to live in Millburn, NJ, and now works in Los Angeles, where he’s the managing director of a company that makes ad jingles. In high school, at The Pingry School in Basking Ridge, Cohen led his quiz bowl team. And in preparation for his Jeopardy! appearance, he used Trivial Pursuit cards (good idea) and worked lots and lots of crosswords (great idea).

He’s also been ribbing Trebek a bit, which is fun, but also dangerous, because Trebek is king.

Will Buzzy continue his streak? Tune in tonight around 7. Or, if you have the Internet, call your grandparents already.
