Why We Hate Her

The roots of Jewish anti-Palinism

Jennifer Rubin’s essay in Commentary (via Ben Smith) is titled, “Why Jews Hate Palin”. She provides a number of answers: the former Alaska governor’s staunch position against permitting abortion; false reports of her association with Patrick Buchanan; the sheer fact that Jews are mostly Democrats. There is more specific cultural correlation between Jews and Palin-haters, too: “American Jews are largely urban, clustered in Blue States, culturally sophisticated, with more years of college and postgraduate education than the average American,” Rubin points out. Finally, Rubin finds an explanation in the historic Jewish emphasis on learning:

Jews, who have excelled at intellectual pursuits, understandably are swayed by the notion that the presidency is a knowledge-based position requiring a background in the examination of detailed data and sophisticated analysis. … Palin’s intellectual unfitness in the eyes of Jews was exaggerated during the course of the campaign as they, like other Americans, received an incomplete image of her abilities and talents.

(Of course, an image may be incomplete but not inaccurate. Just saying.)

Responding to Rubin, David Frum has a different idea:

More than any politician in memory, Palin seems to divide her fellow-Americans into first class and second class citizens, real Americans and not-so-real Americans. To do her justice, she has never said anything to suggest that Jews as Jews fall into the second, less-real, class. But Jews do tend to have an intuition that when this sort of line-drawing is done, we are likely to find ourselves on the wrong side.

Then again, perhaps, as Frum puts it in  a throwaway line, Jewish attitudes toward Palin are “another manifestation of the old rule about Jews being like other people, only more so.” In 2008, 53 percent of voters went for Barack Obama; 78 percent of Jewish voters did so. It should be similarly unsurprising that most Jews disapprove of Palin—and disapprove of her like Ahab disapproved of the whale.

Debbie says:

I’m not exactly a Palin lover or hater – but to be fair – she is the most pro-Israeli politician I’ve heard speak. Why would Jews fear her? We should fear Obama, Zbiegniew, Mitchell and all the other usual anti-Semitic players who have power in this administration.

I stand with Israel says:

Why would you hate Sara Palin when she is one of the few politicians that on Israels side. And if I were a Jew and a Democrat I would be rethinking my political views seriously as to changing to Republican. The democrats are selling freedom down the toilet..and they want the Jews to go down with it. Thats just plain truth. Without American on Israels side you will stand along. Abortion is murder whether you want to believe it or not.. You might want to rethink your heart and its convictions. There is more to being a Jew then being smart and having wealth. You might want to put God back into the center stage of things. And I dont mean looking pious but really becoming one of the heart. Palin knows that Israel belongs to God and she is standing for the winning side and you might want to help with that and stop fighting against it.

Ellen says:

As an intellectual Jewish woman I hated the stupidity of Sarah Palin. I could have voted either way but once she was on board it made my decision easy. But I guess the last laugh is on me that book deal will keep her happy forever!

I believe Palin supports Israel because she believes in the “End of Days”; for which all Jews must return to Israel. All Jews are also supposed to die at that time, but I’m sure she’s not concerned with that.

First of all, I keep issues other than Israel in mind when I vote. Second, I think Frum is basically right. Third, I don’t think my president has to be an intellectual, but I hope he or she isn’t anti-intellectual; that is probably true for a lot of Jews. We’re under no illusion that all good or qualified people are intellectuals, but it’s pretty alien to our tradition to be so hostile to intellectual qualifications, as I think Palin is.

sylvia says:

Abortion is no more murder than eating hard boiled eggs

anita fishburn says:

palin a supporter of israel? are you kidding!! this woman is no supporter of the jewish people…she speaks of support of israel because as a born again christian she feels it is her duty to love jews…to convert jews to her belief…you know, the one that has caused the murder of millions of our people…she believes that until jews beleave that jesus is G-d we will continue to be persecuted…blah blah blah…

Daniel says:

Palin may not be the smartest woman I have ever known – but she is a lot smarter than anyone who voted for Obama believing he would govern transparently, in a bi- or non-partisan manner, would restore fiscal responsibility, reduce unemployment, and stop borrowing against our children’s future.

Yehudit says:

My fellow urban Jews, along with other self-regarding intellectual sophisticates, need – against all evidence – to see Sarah Palin as stupid, because they are insecure with the idea that there are many ways to be intelligent and some of them might be better fitted to the Presidency than the Ivy-League Professors most of them are or admire.

They pay lip-service to diversity, but when confronted with a woman who entered public life without any famous name behind her, won a series of elections (which included televised debates) fair and square against establishment politicians, sent corrupt politicians to jail (earning the enmity of both Democrat and Republican good ole boys), governed with fiscal responsibility and made intelligent decisions about what would benefit her town and state, ran a small business with her husband (being the ONLY of the four candidates who had ever run a business), who in addition has the immense physical intelligence to lead her high-school basketball team to state victory, hunt large animals (I know urban Jews hate this, but you can’t deny it requires intelligence and bravery to do it successfully), and catch salmon for a living in a small boat.

Oh and for lagniappe, she is a good-looking athletic woman successfully married to her handsome outdoorsy working class househusband high-school sweetheart, with five nice kids, one of whom serves in Iraq. (Hmmm, maybe some jealousy at work here as well, although none of these sophisticates would ever admit THAT.) All of that takes intelligence and hard work as well.

They MUST believe she’s stupid, because anyone with that accent who didn’t go to a “good” school, who hunts, who is an evangelical Christian, must be stupid. AND filled with hate. I mean, she must be, right? What part of your worldview would break off and fall into the ocean if you just said, “I don’t agree with her ideas.” (find out what they actually are, first).

As for this: “More than any politician in memory, Palin seems to divide her fellow-Americans into first class and second class citizens, real Americans and not-so-real Americans” Um, who made condescending remarks about those country folk who cling to their guns and religion? Obama set that up, not Palin. But my fellow urban intellectual Jews agree with him, so that’s all right then.

sergey says:

the person who calls himself i am standing with israel is obviously an evangelicals christian. i am ethnically jewish but non-religious and will not recognize evangelicals having moral truth no matter how much they support israel. if there is a jew who unconditionally thinks that evangelicals are delusional when they claim they have guidance from god and are dangerous when they say that everyone knows god, some just “choose to deny him, and if there is a jew who will not try to understand evangelicals and remain pro-choice, i am that jew. no matter how friendly you are to me, i will use your support for israel and still never say that your morals are the true morals.

Sam Shaler says:

One should never underestimate gut feelings. Jewish dislike for Palin is first and foremost instinctive.

Honest Broker says:

David Frum is an intelligent perceptive commentator from the right. He does not support Obama’s positions on the middle east. He has become a pariah amongst tea-party types and neo-cons because he *dares* to analyze things like health care and Sarah Palin from what is best for the right not what is demagogicly correct. Her real message to Jews, and other minorities is “Abandon all Hopey and Changey, ye who enter here”

Brenda says:

I have one question for all of the people that voted for Obama because he was “so intellectual”. Are you happy with his stand against Israel? His first foreign trip was to Turkey, a muslim nation. He has not visited Israel in 18 months. Sarah Palin, a christian, probably would have denounced any country that says “they want to kill all jews and wipe Israel off the map”. I think it’s time to stop hating christians and start working with them for the peace of Jerusalem. It is not about trying to convert jews to christianity, it is about the love and protection of Israel.

rykart says:

A lying, thieving, idiotic disgrace of a human being who supports Israel.

Gee, I wonder if there’s a correlation?

J Carpenter says:

There are Christians who purportedly love Jews—because a nation of Israel fits into their vision of end-times prophecy; and there are Christians who love Jews because of a similar bent towards loving God and loving neighbor, through a common heritage—regardless of politics or nation-state status . . .

David Star says:

Once again the upper west siders look down their noses at Palin. Her misuse of language, her devotion to family, and peculiar affection for Israel.
As a US citizen residing in Israel and a life-long Democrat I look back at the Presidents in my life time from Hoover to Obama.I see many with glowing academic credentials. The best US President of the past 82 years, bar none was the haberdasher from Missouri. There was none braver or more strait forward the Harry Truman. Like Palin he would never win an award for glibness, but when he said S***, you know he meant it!
FDR, Carter and Obama could never stand up to his standards!

The typical Jewish position is that Sarah Palin is a dope and Obama is a genius. After all, he went to Ivy League schools and she didn’t. Nevertheless, I’ver seen no evidence of Obama’s genius. His solutions for the economy have failed. His foreign policy of attacking our allies and surrendering to our enemies has not been productive. He has historically surrounded himself with anti-Israel demagogues such as Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers and Rashid Khalidi. Palin is pro-Israel. At the end of the day, give me a person like Sarah Palin rather than a pseudo intellectual like Barack Obama. Remember, according to the media,Jimmy Carter was supposed to be a genius and Ronald Reagan was supposed tobe a dope. How did that turn out?

john miller says:

It has been almost a year since the last of these comments have been made. Palin will not run, again. Would you say that the election of Obama is now a good thing? No jobs, no money, no hope in his program of change. In 2012, if obama (lower case on purpose) is re-elected, America will fall from within. If America falls, so, too, will Israel. Some cynics have said that the only reason Christians side with Israel is the fulfilling of the end of time Prophecy. That is not so. God said that the Israelites are his people. With that in mind, how could we not side them? Christians are by no means perfect, yet to be Christians, we must follow the words of God as best we can. Jews who stand with The Muslim Imposter are against God themselves. May wisdom come to them before The Usurper causes the destruction of both of our countries.

God is my judge (Daniel) says:

Why is abortion and gayness wrong but eating pork and mixing fabrics is okay? This is the reason Jews are instinctively suspicious of Christian politicians, or more specifically, politicians who intend to legislate their allegedly Christian morals. It’s the whole pick-and-chooseyness of it. It calls the entire agenda into question. As for being “against God [ourselves]“, there is no mention of Islam anywhere in the Tanakh, as it had not been invented (nor had Christianity) so it’s hard to say how God would feel about our support of this supposed “Muslim Impostor” (who happens be Christian.) However, God’s opinions on slander (Lev 19:16) are not nearly as debatable. You may now cast the first stone…
