What would Dr. Freud say about Israel?(Talking in Circles)

• Prime Minister Netanyahu said the decision to landmark Abraham’s and Rachel’s burial sites in Israel-controlled West Bank was being blown way out of proportion: it isn’t meant to change those sites’ status quo. (But isn’t the concern that it will make that status quo permanent?) [JPost]

• Meanwhile, on the ground, there were skirmishes between young Palestinians and Israeli soldiers over the move, though larger protests didn’t materialize. [NYT]

• Longtime Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat has suggested, it was revealed, that the Palestinians drop claims for autonomy and instead try to get a single binational state established. [Haaretz]

• The passport photos of the suspected assassins of Hamas’s chief weapons man were doctored slightly, so that now, the suspects couldn’t be identified as easily. Maybe Mossad didn’t bungle this as much as we think? More later in the day. [Haaretz]

• U.S. diplomats told Israeli counterparts in Jerusalem they expect new Security Council sanctions on Iran in March or April. [Haaretz]

• A psychologist diagnoses the Israelis and the Palestinians with “collective trauma,” for which the cure is “diplomatic therapy.” Presumably not at $225/hour. [NYT]

fred lapides says:

I had read the Times op ed piece on treating the Israel/Palestinian stalemate as in need of therapy, the sort of thing a psychiatrist might offer. And I reminded of Freud’s piece about endless therapy. Perhaps marriage therapy might prove more productive. In this approach, we learn from statistics, the marriage usually ends in divorce but the judge is satisfied that an attempt had been made to fix things.

Bryna Weiss says:

Saeb Erekat can suggest a single state till the cows come home. Does he plan to invade Israel? That will never happen!! Israel is the Jewish State and will remain so forever. Why don’t they just agree finally, to sit down and hammer out an agreement and get on with living and building a society and an economy and education for the Palestinians!?

Bryna Weiss says:

An agreement for a two state solution, of course.

How about reality therapy? There is no “Palestinian” history. “Palestinians” have called for the destruction of Israel. Their media indocrinates the population AND their children to hate Jews. They have decimated previously Christian majority areas now under their control. Their maps indicate that their new state is all of Israel. All Jewish sites while under Muslim control were defaced, destroyed and off limits to Jews. There is no diplomacy possible with their world view. As for the above comment many attempts by Israel have been tried. Oslo ended in the murderous Intifada and the expulsion of Jews from Israeli land; Gush Katif has ended with Hamas attacks on Israeli civilians almost daily for eight years. I suggest therapy for those who still believe it is possible to negotiate with terrorism.

Nothing focuses the mind like rockets on the front lawn.

Ed Book says:

Just as hundreds of years later, Israel got the Land of Canaan back, so too in time there will be a Palestinian state. Synthetic borders crafted by politicans and winners in war, simply do not last. Yugoslavia is a prime example; the 2 Vietnams is another. Most Americans are apt to think they were duped into the war in Iraq. France was vilified, but correct in its demurral. Ultimately, there will be 3 nations carved from Iraq, a Shiite Republic, a Sunni Sectarian state, and a Kurdish state — there are perhaps 20 or so “disenfranchised” Kurds for every single Palestinian. Ater Israel, Iran is actually the most democratic country in the Midest; like the Soviet Union that came apart in 1991, the revolution of blue jeans, women’s rights, & teenage rock & roll cannot be stopped. Saudi Arabia, is like the god Janus, 2-faced, & children in its schools are taught to hate Americans & Jews. Its so-called Royal Family was anointed by the Allies after WWI. Today it is the most total dictatorship in the region.
