Marc, this is a fantastic piece. I was in Berlin not too long ago myself, and I agree with you that it certainly carries a cooler-than-thou vibe while it also wears its historical insecurities on its sleeve. One item I would have liked to see you approach is the on-going tiff between Germans and Turkish immigrants, not to mention the failure of Turkish integration into Berlin. Yes, you say that Berliners are ashamed of their past prejudices and crimes, but what of today's treatment of their Turkish denizens?

"One night, we went to a bar in Friedrichshain, a working-class neighborhood of East Berlin turned typical gentrifying fantasy land, whose theme was Communist kitsch. Yes, that is a big picture of Marx. History here has been co-opted, tamed, and harnessed by the ironic perspective that time can provide."

Ok, So? There is a similar restaurant in Beijing (you can order Chou En Lai soup)

There is little relationship between the title and the content.

First, the French word for street is rue, but you knew that. Had they used rue, it would have been a bigger deal. Second, the French know very well that there were "collabos" and that the country has had what to deal with. Whatever you think of Chirac, he made a statement of apology and remorse for the collaboration. It was a big deal, in fact. Enough to allow them to focus on the present while acknowledging the past.

At the same time it seems that Tel Aviv's young cultural elite has chosen Berlin as the place to be for the time being. Writers, DJ's, musicians, painters, film makers, they are all there.
