Elvis Costello.(Wikipedia)

Tablet Magazine and The Scroll will be dark until Friday morning in observance of Shavuot. Have a good holiday!

• Elvis Costello canceled two planned concerts in Caesarea, Israel, out of “instinct and conscience” regarding the Palestinian issue. [Arts Beat]

• Tablet Magazine contributor David P. Goldman takes issue with Peter Beinart’s essay: “Zionism is in no danger. The entity that is in trouble is Jewish liberalism.” [First Things]

• Meanwhile, Beinart happily reports that no one has accused him of Israel- or self-hatred. [Jeffrey Goldberg]

• Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-New York) has introduced a House resolution demanding that Hamas release Gilad Shalit. [JTA]

• Jean-Luc Godard’s new film, which debuted yesterday at Cannes, has references to “Jews, Hollywood and the Holocaust.” Not clear if they are meant to be related to each other, or if they just seem that way because of the jump-cuts! [Arts Beat]

• Tonight, at The Strand in Manhattan, Jewcy hosts the first Yiderati reading series. It features, among others, Tablet contributing editor Rachel Shukert. Come one, come all! [Jewcy]

So Elvis Costello, criticized for using racial slurs to describe–I think it was Ray Charles–wants his moment of righteousness by condemning the Jews. How very English.

Marc R says:

I hope Elvis decides never to play the U.S. again because of the Native American issue.

Couldn’t agree more, Marc R. What is a reservation if not a concentration camp? Likewise, Australia, the world’s biggest penal colony, confiscated from the Aborigines–literally, the original people there. Of course, Britain should be off limits, given what it’s done to the Irish, the Argentinians, and well, just about everybody. Mexico has closed its southern border to refugees, Spain retains two colonial outposts in North Africa, Ceuta and Melilla, Russia has crushed the Chechens, Europe sat on it’s hands while Bosnian Muslims in its back yard were slaughtered en masse.

I’m sure he’ll be donating the proceeds from his concerts and recordings to all of these worthy causes.

MAXS says:

Why has this washed up has been suddenly decided to “boycott Israel? Because he was having trouble selling tickets to his second show.

Reflecting more on this, it is just amazing to me that a man whose intelligence and iconoclasm I used to admire has acted with such mindless conformism.
