Israeli Brothers to Face Federal Music

Israel extradited the Abergil gangsters to L.A. today

Maybe even as I type, Itzhak and Meir Abergil, two of the most prominent members of Israeli organized crime (allegedly), are on a plane bound for Los Angeles, where, following Israeli extradition, they will face federal charges that they paid for murder and conspired with the Vineland Boyz, a Latino Gang based in Los Angeles’s San Fernando Valley, to distribute nearly one million ecstasy pills in California.

Contributing editor Douglas Century briefed us on their case in 2009:

Headquartered in Israel’s northern coastal city of Netanya, the Abergils were arrested last August following a sweeping FBI investigation that spanned six years and involved law enforcement from more than ten countries across North America, Europe, East Asia, and the Middle East. The feds’ indictment assesses the Abergils’ fortune in the millions, and exposes their complex international enterprise: drugs were manufactured in the family’s laboratories in Belgium and then smuggled into California by ingenious means, including stuffing them into toy tigers.

If tales of Israeli gangsters interest you (and how could they not?), the Abergils appear in part four of Century’s epic Tablet series on the Israeli mafia, which is waiting for you to print it out and devour it over the long weekend.
