Top Chef Star starting a Kosher food truck

Spike Mendelsohn and D.C.’s Sixth and I Historic Synagogue are starting a whole new way to kick off your weekend early with a Friday-only lunchtime kosher food truck.

Mendelsohn, famous from his tenure on Top Chef, has made D.C. his culinary stomping ground with restaurants Good Stuff Eatery and We, the Pizza. He’s now taking kosher cuisine by storm. The truck will be dubbed “Sixth & Rye,” and Mendelsohn and co. plan to feature traditional Jewish staples like corned beef sandwiches and knishes. The goal is to make it as “deli-like as possible,” Mendelsohn’s sister told The Feast.

The idea was inspired by the dearth of kosher deli in Washington, and Mendelsohn is interested to expanding the kosher enterprise if it’s successful.

It remains to be seen whether this will just be kosher-style or will have a hashgacha from a local rabbinate, but Sixth and Rye will be parked outside of the former synagogue, and is due to debut at the end of April, perfect timing to break your Passover chametz ban.

It really bothers me -A Morrocan kid who grew up in montreal and now lives in Israel-to see these items called traditional Jewish food, they are Ashkenazi/European/American Jewish food, please don’t forget the adjectives

Patrick, please get over yourself, it really isn’t personal. Besides, is Sfaradi kosher cooking really Jewish, or Sfaradi? Let’s keep our eye on the ball here….

Hey, let’s just enjoy the fact that a cornucopia of kosher foods from different traditions is readily available, at least in larger cities. Have a Good Shabbos, or Shabbat Shalom, whatever floats your boat habibi!

As a New Yorker down here for the last 4 years, my mouth is watering for Kosher or Kosher style food. Used to be good Kosher style place called Chutzpah but it fell down the drain when they opened another one someplace else.

Seemed they brought the left overs to the original one.

Watched you and hoped you would win on Top Chef.

There are more Jews and non-Jews that love Jewish food so come and try it out here instead of D.C.

I cook Kosher style, make an omelet with corned beef hash, sweet and sour cabbage, meat borscht, brisket pot roasted and painted with BBQ sauce [the secret is KC], 3B soup[bean, barley and beef],chopped liver, floating knoedels in chicken soup. I also like to cook oriental, like lobster cantonese [use monkfish filet as a substitute for lobster, in season], South American as Seviche. French as Cassoulet and Bouilliabaise, New Orleans seafood and sausage gumbo, Spanish Paella. It waould take a fire truck to carry th equipment and supplies. I think I’ll stick to an imovable feast. Blindfold the mashgiach!
