Michelle Goldberg’s column today in Tablet Magazine spotlights the country with the most aggressively pro-natalist policy and culture in the world. “It’s not surprising that Israel,” Goldberg notes, “a society that is at once rooted in ancient faith and deeply invested in cutting-edge technology, has pioneered futuristic forms of procreation.” Goldberg takes an especially close look at Israel’s unusually strong right to grandparenthood, including in cases where the father is dead—a more frequent occurrence in a country with universal military conscription.
