Head’s-Up Bystander Saved Lives

Obama offers strong condemnation, statement of support for Israel

As night fell in Israel, the toll from today’s bomb at a Jerusalem bus stop stood at one death and a few dozen wounded. And, it seems, those numbers would have been higher were it not for David Amoyal, a civilian, who spotted a suspicious package, told kids playing nearby to move away from it, and called the police; during his call, the bomb went off (he was injured).

Meanwhile, President Obama released a statement:

I condemn in the strongest possible terms the bombing in Jerusalem today, as well as the rockets and mortars fired from Gaza in recent days. Together with the American people, I offer my deepest condolences for those injured or killed. There is never any possible justification for terrorism. The United States calls on the groups responsible to end these attacks at once and we underscore that Israel, like all nations, has a right to self-defense. We also express our deepest condolences for the deaths of Palestinian civilians in Gaza yesterday. We stress the importance of calm and urge all parties to do everything in their power to prevent further violence and civilian casualties.

Geoff says:

What a mealy-mouthed statement by the coward-in-chief. He couldn’t just condemn the bombing alone – he had to incorporate some statement about those killed in Gaza, who were only killed because the Palestinians decided the firing mortars & rockets at civilians is perfectly acceptable.

November 2012 cannot come fast enough.

I think the last line does vitiate the rest of the statement. How are ‘all parties’ supposed to do anything to arrest the reintroduction of violence against Israelis by Hamas? Frankly, if Israel were to follow that advice to the letter, it would respond with overwhelming force, a move that might in fact prevent ‘further violence and civilian casualties.’

It is Hamas that is responsible, exclusively, for death and injuries sustained by both sides. This rhetorical muddying of the waters by Obama is not going to help his legacy any.

tillkan says:

Once again the occupier gets the sympathy. Israel is amazingly excellent at breaking ceasefires and making it look like someone else’s fault.

Israel pulled out of Gaza in 2005; they are not occupying it.

Or do you suppose that Hamas is actually an Israeli puppet group?

Steph F. says:

We can express condolences for the civilians who died in Gaza because they shouldn’t have to die as a result of Hamas’s provocations.

Terry, Eilat - Israel says:

This was just boiler-plate platitudes from the Wimp-in-Chief, nothing but moral equivalancy. What a creep!

Garry says:

This is a statement of support for Israel? Gee, I really didn’t notice. It is a meaningless bit of pablum. Oh, I forgot. There’s a Presidential election next year. The Democrats are looking for money. Any Jews around? Barak O. knows how to play the game. Soon he’ll be running to synagogues and wearing a kippah. The Jewish left loves and will love him and open their checkbooks freely. Watch ou. In a second term he will have no restraints in expressing his true feelings.

George One says:

Obama’s expression of sympathy is meaningless. He has to stop funding Palestinians until the latter stop all violent acts against Israel. He also has to ensure that the UN agencies stop funding activities in Gaza. These would be the only meaningful acts Obama could undertake. And they might actually push the Palestinians into moving towards a real peace with Israel.

Marty Janner says:

What was said in the previous comments, one would come to the conclusion that he was Ogre that was supporting the activities of the terrorists in the Middle East!

Let us not forget the Gazans, Hezbollah, the oil rich kingdoms! To make Obama your scapegoat, is absolute nonsense! What he is trying to do is appear even handed.

Whomever is at the receiving end are human beings. Innocent Israelis, and at the Arab side many, that may be innocent as well! Let us not treat every action taken with a broad brush.

If, it’s your intent to discredit our president, relative to the 2012 election election results, your applications are resourceful! If so, I must remind you of what has transpired recently within the USA.

If this is the course you wish to remain on, continue and have a country reminiscent of the 1930′s!

JCarpenter says:

“We underscore that Israel, like all nations, has a right to self-defense . . .” pretty strong statement of support, I’d think.
I’m trying hard to be as objective as possible—and I cannot find any statements from Pres. Obama that deserve such ridicule, let alone criticism, in the comments above.
Condemnation of violence, sympathy for loss of life and injuries, a call for peace. . . . so what’s not to like?
Save the vitriol for the terrorists.

JACK gLASNER says:

there is only one solution….VOTE AGAINST HIM,

Bryna Weiss says:

JC Carpenter Thank you for your intelligent and thougthful comments. These ignorant critics of Obama are idiots. Hardly worth fretting over!

Dorothy Wachsstock says:

Pres. Obama and the democrats know they are losing the Jewish voters finally but Obama cannot follow directions because he is pro-Palestinian and cannot help himself.

After 20 years of listening to Wright, Farrakhan and Jimmy Carter..it is only the Jews that vote democrat are now to blame for the misery the Israelis have.

We have elected Jewish democrats to support this country and Israel and all we hear are the clowns like Cong. Weiner on the floor with lies about the death of our Medical care called Obamacare.

Speak to regular doctors and they will tell you the same. Doctors who always voted democrat will go into the booth this time in 2012 and vote republican if the republicans start to fight back.
