Today in Tablet Magazine, Mideast columnist Lee Smith explores official Washington’s seemingly unshakable attachment to the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad (and, before him, that of his father, Hafez), despite the fact that it refuses to make peace with Israel, sponsors terror, and, in recent weeks, has opened fire on its own people. This bipartisan blind eye must simply be “emotional,” Smith concludes, in part because no other reason makes any sense.
