The Government Shutdown: Bad For the Jews!

Holocaust Memorial Museum would be closed

Should the federal government shut down because of partisan budget differences, “essential” employees would continue working: President Obama would still be on call, and congresspeople would still receive salaries from your tax dollars (due later this month!). However, thanks to the intrepid reporting of Our Man on the Interwebs Dan Klein, I can confirm that among the “non-essential” government functions that would close pending a new budget is the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. “If the government shuts down the Museum will be closed to the public beginning Saturday, April 9th,” a Museum representative wrote in an email, “and no visitors will be allowed to enter the building while the federal government shutdown is in effect.”

The email added, “The Museum is America’s national institution for the documentation, study, and interpretation of Holocaust history, and serves as this country’s memorial to the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust.” Sounds pretty essential to me!

rachel says:

I don’t know….this is kind of hyperbolic handwringing. I’ve been a “non-essential” employee through a state level shut down, and I remember the earlier federal shut down in the 90s. I think that the museums (this one included) are important (I’m an art historian! Of course they are important!) but essential in the terms of budgetary expense….not really.

It’s not a permanent shut down. It’s a temporary closure. I think the thing to worry about more is whether people will be getting “essential services” such as food, health care and public safety.

Angela says:

I find the headline of this article wildly misleading–you seem to be implying that the Holocaust museum only exists for the sake of the Jews. Really, Holocaust remembrance is for everyone.

ourit says:

This article is simply stupid.

fred lapides says:

I wish they would close down the entire govt so that our citizens would take to the streets, as they now do in the Middle East, and demand some semblance of a functioning government for the people…only a full shut down would get people riled to the point of making demands for some sanity in DC.

Len Forster says:

Oh, please! I know the Museum is important to us Jews, but, in the greater context of a government shutdown, it is nothing. You have created a tempest in a teapot.

If you want to feel sorry for someone affected by the government shutdown, feel sorry for members of our military and their families who won’t even be able to put food on the table for their children.

And, you’re pissing and moaning because the Holocaust Memorial Museum will be closed? Give me a break!

Dorothy Wachsstock says:

Len Forster, thank you. As a Jew, I am more concerned about the future of this country with the spending our radical socialists on the left have done and want to do and leave my grandchildren the debt.

They all go into Congress looking like they are homeless and somehow within a year, the women have great clothes, good hairdos and they only care about getting elected again and Planned Parenthood is the term used for women’s mammagrams and Healthcare which they do not give.

Unfortunately, we do not have any true media anymore. We got more truth in reporting when the reporters were poor and not attending the cocktail parties inside the beltway. How could they say something bad about the Senator who had them at his house for dinner the night before?

We are finished and if these radical socialists, our ancestors ran from people like this, continue to reign in 2012..our country as we knew it will be gone and we will be Cuba with the dictator.

Poor Sen. Reid came on the floor today crying he had no healthcare for his wife, daughters, granddaughters if there was no healthcare in the bill. He didn’t dare mention the word Planned Parenthood.

Dorothy Wachsstock says:

I think we should do a fundraising for Sen. Reid so his family can have some private doctors. Forgot to put that in my last comment.

Dan Klein says:

@Dorothy “Unfortunately, we do not have any true media anymore. We got more truth in reporting when the reporters were poor and not attending the cocktail parties inside the beltway.”

AHAHAHAHAHAHHA.

LaVerne Cohen says:

I am Very Jewish, but in this situation you are “crying wolf” The museum is NOT as essential as the pay for Millions of Black citizens out of jobs this week who cannot pay their bills.

American Patriot says:

The museum helps keep the holohoax industry going……

Hmmm.

Maybe you could raise some funds by selling some stuff. Soap and lamp shades?

That museum is not essential. It is bullshit.
