A Modest Proposal Regarding the Dodgers

How Commissioner Bud Selig can remake his legacy and cement his Jewishness

Print Email
Ebbets Field, former home of the former Brooklyn Dodgers.(Wikipedia)

Dear Bud Selig,
You’re retiring at the end of next season. Your last big move as commissioner of Major League Baseball—a stint that saw the 1994 strike; four expansion franchises; the switch of the team you used to own, the Milwaukee Brewers, from the American to the National League; and most memorably of all the steroids scandal—will likely be your recent takeover of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Mr. Selig, you are also a Jew, and therefore probably have an intuitive grasp of the connection the American Jewish community feels to this franchise.

Mr. Selig, sunshine and palm trees are great, and Dodger Stadium is wonderful: It makes you feel like you have stepped into the California scenes of Mad Men. L.A. has a very solid baseball fanbase, too. No disrespect here.

But, Mr. Selig, if you want to be remembered as a hero, you have one obvious move left: Move the team back to Brooklyn.

The borough is about to get a basketball team. It has experienced a resurgence that its newly team-less denizens of a half-century ago could never have imagined. It is therefore time. It is past time. The front entrance can even be named after Vin Scully.

L.A.? L.A. can have the Mets.

shavit says:

this is the best idea i’ve heard of in quite some time.

Brooklyn is nice this time of year.

Mr Mel says:

Please lay of the Mets for a while, they seem to be coming around and their Jewish star Ike Davis is hitting in the mid 300s. I think their players are OK but unfortunately their Doctors aren’t very good. Anytime a Met gets hurt they just don’t seem to heal fast enough.

LA can not have the Mets, Mr. Tracy!

Such an indecent proposal warrants the sort of vitriolic commentary so often appended to Tablet articles (and that I typically abhor). For shame, for shame.

Les Miller says:

Perhaps Selig can spring Bernie Madhoff from prison and install him as the new owner of the returning Dodgers? Madhoff, afterall, is the most important Jew in baseball. Just ask Fred Wilpon or Sandy Koufax.

Dorothy Wachsstock says:

Bud Selig lost all of his credibility when he allowed good players to do things that years ago would have thrown them out of the team.

He is part of the people that allowed deviancey to destroy the wonderful example for all the children to disappear.

Jessie Jackson called him up and that stupid basket ball player who choked his coach was able to continue playing and was purchased by the Knicks..another dumb example to our children..all the coaches and all the heads of these organizations destroyed good examples for our children and now steroids…

Shame is gone from this country and soon as you watch what is being taught in our schools,..sex at age 5 years old, children screaming in a class that advocates Mexico taking over Arizona and Ca and New Mexico..you have seen those children yelling and screaming on tv while a security guard walks by…

Selig is no different than the current inmates that are now running the asylum with socialism and vote for this Marxist Obama.

They will learn what their ancestors ran from to come to this country for liberty when they do not have it anymore.

Alter says:

I yearn for the return of the dDodgers to Brooklyn…so that the Yankee-Dodger rivalry can resume–and the Yankees can resume their domination over them The Mets never belonged. Even their uniforms are ugly.

Yankel Know It ALL says:

Are we talking about indoor women’s football here?

Bix2 says:

Ms Wachsstock…
What r u smoking and where can get some?
Bud Selig is the commissioner of BASEBALL, not basketball.
And if you think we still don’t have liberty in this country perhaps you should try Iran.

Anyway, the comments here are supposed to be about baseball.

Being from Brooklyn myself, I think moving the Dodgers back to Flatbush is a GREAT idea.
