Mardy Fish Goes Down at Wimbledon
Nadal defeats Jewish-American to advance to semis
UPDATE 2:12: Game, set, match. Sad-face. Fish has now made three Grand Slam quarterfinals and lost all three—two to the magnificent Nadal. No shame in that.
UPDATE 2:08: Fish holds. Nadal serves up 5-4.
UPDATE 2:04: Nadal held. Fish is serving down 5-3; he can’t lose another game this set.
UPDATE 2:00: After easily holding his own serve, Nadal lost in an epic 14-point game. Nadal now serves up 4-3, so Fish is still in trouble; he needs to hold his serves and break Nadal’s, and he will only have one or two more chances to do that. Down but not out.
UPDATE 1:44: Each held serve, Nadal serving up 3-2. Fish has to break him at some point.
UPDATE 1:38: Nadal broke Fish’s serve in the third game of the fourth set, now serving up 2-1. Not good.
UPDATE 1:24: Fish took the third set! Nadal is now up two sets to one. Nadal should have beaten Fish in straight sets; that he didn’t is not-entirely-implausible grounds for hope.
12:32: Turn on your television (or go here) to follow the quarterfinals match between Mardy Fish, an American Jew, and number-one-ranked Rafael Nadal at the All England Club. Nadal took the first two sets, but they are breaking each other’s serves, and Fisher has eight aces to Nadal’s two, so we may have something of a ballgame here. Maybe? Hopefully? Winner plays Andy Murray. Anyway, go watch.
