A Very Woody Wedding

Sam Schechner and Mara Hoberman.(Annie Powers/NYT)

Each Monday, we choose the most interestingly Jewish announcement from that Sunday’s New York Times Weddings/Celebrations section. This was quite a competitive week! Circus people. A Curb Your Enthusiasm producer. Ramaz teacher. Institutional folk. But there can only be one, and this week it’s that of Mara Hoberman and Sam Schechner, who come from a very culturally specific Jewish milieu, the one you generally see depicted in Woody Allen films (or at least the ones not set in Europe). His parents (and even stepmother) are all big in the drama world; her father is longtime Village Voice film critic J. Hoberman, author of one of my favorite essays on Jewishness, and her mother is a social worker. They first met at Hunter College High School; they live in Carroll Gardens. Well of course. Mazel tov to the happy couple!

“A long casual relationship”? Sound so tawdry and very Woody Allen indeed.
