Ousted Penn State President Is Jewish

Graham Spanier was fired last night along with Coach Joe Paterno

Print Email

JTA reports that Penn State President Graham Spanier was also active at the campus Hillel. It’s fascinating how, last night, the Board of Trustees of a gigantic university sensationally sacked the university’s president … and hardly anybody noticed, because the firing of the iconic football coach, Joe Paterno, was much bigger news.

Spanier’s heritage obviously doesn’t exactly make this a “Jewish” story, but as this is your daily blog of Jewish life and sports, a few brief observations:

• Anybody who feels Paterno deserved to spend another season or game or day as coach of the Nittany Lions needs to read the section on “Victim 2″ in the grand jury’s report. He has lost absolutely all moral authority.

• Anybody who can’t understand why some Penn State students rioted last night in protest of Paterno’s ouster needs to understand that in a blue-collar state like Pennsylvania with a gigantic land-grant Big Ten state university like Penn State, college football has genuine, valid meaning in people’s lives that readers who haven’t lived it may not fully understand. (This article may be helpful here.) Everybody has things that are important to them that are not important to other people.

• Joe Paterno is a legend for all the right reasons. He genuinely believed in the ideal of the “student-athlete,” which has been turned into a joke by the depredations of the NCAA; even today, Penn State graduates more of its athletes than most other athletic programs of its caliber. At important moments (most notably, the 1987 Fiesta Bowl), Paterno, the Brown grad who basically created Penn State’s classics department, was a singular symbol for that. He is also a brilliant football coach. Any Penn State fan’s anger at losing Joe Paterno is completely justified.

• What is completely unjustified is directing this anger at anybody other than at Jerry Sandusky, the former defensive coordinator and alleged predator, whose crimes were are still learning the extent of, and his enablers at Penn State, who included Paterno and Spanier. Paterno should have gone to the cops immediately back when he heard that Sandusky had raped a minor in the locker room; when the news broke a few days ago, he should have resigned immediately. Instead, several years ago, he told the athletic director (fulfilling his minimal legal obligations). Earlier this week, he waffled, then announced he would retire at the end of the season, and basically challenged the Board to cross him: “At this moment,” he said, “the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status.”

• The Board should be applauded for accepting that challenge and proving that they have significantly more integrity than, say, the Catholic Church. Given Paterno’s power and appeal, it was by no means a foregone conclusion that it would act as it did.

• As Paterno said a couple nights ago, pray for the victims.

Don’t forget, the child molester himself is a Jew too

Rico Swavay says:

Marc – are you on acid? Did you really write, “What is completely unjustified is directing this anger at anybody other than at Jerry Sandusky”? This is one of the most idiotic things I have ever read. We SHOULD be angry at Sandusky’s behavior, but we should have equal outrage for the hierarchy that protected and coddled Sandusky – and granted him an other decade of predatory behavior. JoePa may not be legally guilty, but he sure as hell is morally guilty. And Spanier is guilty of running Penn State as a jockocracy in which the football team was immune from following the rules…or even the law.

Rico, read carefully.

The quote is “What is completely unjustified is directing this anger at anybody other than at Jerry Sandusky, the former defensive coordinator and alleged predator, whose crimes were are still learning the extent of, and his enablers at Penn State, who included Paterno and Spanier.”

Note the last two clauses. Marc is not on acid, although he did write a run-on sentence.

justicegirl says:

I think Common Sense, the first poster, is on acid.

The whole thing is jewish guy raping gentile young boys and protected by Jew president. I would put joe paterno in jail as well. But knowing america run by jews , if you are jew you can kill(amanda knox) , rape (kahn), child molestation (sandusky). all will escape with minor sentence. He will run away to israel. Jews running amok. People are trying to save their arse even now because you can’t tell jewish guy is doing evil.

Common sense says:

Interesting. Typical Jewish attack. Attack the person (saying I’m on acid) because you are unable to attack the facts in which he is stating. You cannot dispute that the rapist child molestor in this case is a Jew. Although I agree with you Alex, you are wrong on Amanda Knox. She was not the murderer nor is she Jewish.

Politics about a Jew.. Tablet you suck. WHere do you get your funding from?

What was the religion of the children who were the victims of the sexual abuse? Why is the Penn State President’s religious affiliation relevant to anything?

brynababy says:

My God, are all these people mad??!

The anti-semites are out in force. I can’t find any source that says Jerry Sandusky is Jewish. I’ll bet that Alex and CommonSense think all those priests are really Jewish too.

Patski says:

Thanks, Barry. You said it all!

Common sense says:

Wow look. The “anti-semetic” card didn’t take long to be played. It’s truth about Jews. Tell me, oh anti-Semite expert… What’s your take on Arabs? I’m sure I know where you stand. That makes you and anti-Semite. Most Jews around the world are not even Semitic people, so say “anti-Jew” an you’re more accurate.

Christopher Orev says:

Oy, vey.

You say Penn State has more integrity than the Catholic Church. What a joke! Just about about every top official at Penn State has known about this since 1998 and they let Sandusky go on abusing – though they fired him. Two top officials are accused of lying to lying under oath to a Grand Jury. Some wonderful integrity there. Every member of the board had to have heard the rumors. The board only acted when they had their backs against the wall.

Everyone should have learned from the Catholic Church experience. (It is actually a small number of priests from the total where ever it has been found. However, the press would have you believe otherwise.) But it certainly appears Penn State did not learn anything as they lied and covered up for years.

Nice to scapegoat the Catholic Church (as most do) but not admit it is in every religious group, every secular group and schools, every ethnic group and all economic levels. (The vast percentage of abusers are actually close family or trusted friends.) And it has almost always been covered up.

“Most Jews around the world are not even Semitic people,…”

Voted up for that.
:)

“I would put joe paterno in jail as well.”

I’m no Anthropologist,
but I’m pretty sure that Italians are just Jews with crosses.
