Publishing Henry Miller’s controversial, racy novel Tropic of Cancer as a paperback was, obscenity critic Josh Lambert writes today in Tablet Magazine, “probably the single ballsiest move in modern American publishing.” In Miller’s own work and life, in which the Jews were alternately loathed and venerated, you can find hints of the fact that most of the people responsible for that ballsy move were Jewish Americans.
