Happy Hanukkah?

Santorum holiday card mixes messages with New Testament quote

Print Email
The card. (Slate)

In an effort to reach out to Jewish voters in the Palmetto State, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum’s South Carolina team sent out a Hanukkah card. “Happy Hanukkah from S.C. Team Santorum,” reads the card, which Slate posted. There’s a menorah! Dreidels! A Star of David! Gang’s all here!

And… a four-line quote from John 8:12, which readers of this blog might recognize as belonging to the New Testament. Better luck next year, Santorum.

Hi Judi,

I can’t stop laughing at this!

this is more offensive than people think. that quote is from jesus saying that those who dont follow him are going to hell…

this isn’t funny.

Suzy Lenkowsky says:

I agree with Ilan, it’s not funny. He couldn’t be bothered to have a staff member ask SOME Jewish authority what would be appropriate? Call a shul for goodness sakes!!
Makes me wonder if he ever met a Jew.
It also has the feel of the Evangelical Christian arrogance that I’ve encountered. There’s no way but theirs.
If he can’t be bothered to understand Jews enough to get a correct quote on a Chanukah card how could he be trusted to represent us? Laughing this off as a little faux pas is laughing at the little spot on your skin and not realizing it’s cancer !America is heading toward becoming a theocracy.
In the interest of full disclosure I’m sixty-two and have never voted Republican in my life…..a record I intend to keep.

I think it’s funny AND offensive.
But the quote needn’t be interpreted as Ilan claims. Light and darkness are pretty flexible symbols. They can represent much more than heaven and hell.
