American Jews Warming to Obama, Says Koch

Former mayor receiving fewer complaints, responds to all letters

Ben Smith reports in Politico that, in Ed Koch’s opinion, American Jews are warming to President Barack Obama. By which Koch means they’re complaining less, by email, to him. Koch makes a point of responding to every letter and email that gets sent to him, and considering his continued influence in the political sphere, his sample group is worth considerating.

According to Smith:

The president’s rising fortunes among Jewish voters, at least according to Koch’s brand of polling, may face a critical test in the coming months; whether Washington stands in support if Israel decides to take military action to halt Iran’s drive for nuclear weapons. In perhaps the most important sign of Obama’s strengthened pro-Israel credentials, Koch and others have come to believe that if the Netanyahu government bombs Iranian installations, Obama will back them; and that an American strike isn’t out of the question.

“This is an existential threat to Western civilization,” said Koch. “I think that the president and others have recognized that and will do whatever is required to keep our nation safe.”

Marc Tracy emphasized Koch’s influence in September, particularly the significance of his endorsement of Obama for re-election after playing a key role in New York’s ninth district electing a Republican in the special election:

And this is important for two related reasons. First, it’s a sign that the administration/campaign’s charm offensive—beginning with the embassy rescue, continuing to the unequivocal support Obama offered Israel at the United Nations in both his deeds and his speech, and going through the new revelations of heightened military-to-military cooperation—are having an impact on convincing fence-sitting American Jews that Obama is their friend. Second, it’s important because, as Tevi Troy presciently wrote many months ago in Tablet Magazine, Koch is the emblematic figure of this sort, whom Democratic candidates need on their side.

But let’s not lose sight of what is possibly the best part of this story: Ed Koch’s correspondence. BuzzFeed has a collection of several emails, which Koch’s assistant prints out and gives to him and upon which he writes responses by hand, which then get typed up and sent. That is dedication.

His best response? “Please point out one ‘canard’ in my statement.”

Derek Wain says:

MB has been the most courageous and forthright leader in calling out Barack Hussein Obama for his pre-emptive surrender to radical Islam in Egypt and worldwide. This is why MB is hated by Obama’s political groupies.
Barack Hussein Obama stated in an interview with Nicholas Kristof (NYT) that the Muslim called to prayer is the most beautiful sound in all the world.

In an interview with George Stephanopoulos, Barack Hussein Obama was asked about the importance of religion in his life, to which the newly elected President replied that “Islam played a key role in my life.”
Stephanopoulos waited an agonizing minute for a correction that never came and then helpfully prompted the President-elect, “You mean “Christianity played a key role in your life.”
MB has exposed Barack Husein Obama’s foreign policy of accommodation, apology, and appeasement of radical Islam.

Gail Abramson says:

Mayor Koch has done an admirable job showcasing the growing dissatisfaction of the Jewish community with President Obama and his policies. Mr. Obama may still retain the majority of the Jewish vote this year (shame on us!) but don’t believe that the tide is turning in his favor. And it’s not just Israel.

I hope Mayor Koch realizes he doesn’t speak for all American Jews when he aligns himself so closely with Likudniks. In fact I think Mayor Koch speaks for a waning minority of American Jews on the question of policy toward peace and Israel.

Dear Mayor Koch,

You are one of the best Mayor’s we’ve had in a long time. As a registered Democrat, I’m asking you not to drink the Obama kool-aid. Good Shabbos Mr. Mayor.

Marty Janner says:

It appears that Mayor Koch is cooling off his rhetoric. He has begun to understand that Obama’s Policies are not anti Israel!

The truth of the matter is that his views, are no different from our previous relationships! The issue in question is the relationship between Bibbi and himself! Anytime a head of state goes before a governmental entity, our Congress, and feeds his countries propaganda to a supportive element, that being the Evangelicals, and the Jewish Representatives, this isn’t appropriate!

Let us remember that during the Yom Kippur War, our President Nixon saved Israel! This was done, despite the fact that he was Overtly Anti-Semitic, as proven by the later tapes! Obama isn’t cut from the same cloth! Let’s give this guy a break!

If, and when, you study the situation, you may come to the conlusion of Mayor Koch!

Yaakov Hillel says:

Obama is playing the political game in order to go back in to a second time and the Jews are swallowing the bait. Israel wanted to by their Jets else where because the administration especially the state department considers Israel a thorn in the backside, and always has. How many Jets have been supplied to Israel since Obama has gone into Office 0 is close to that number. this is of dire necessity to Israel. The USA does not let Israel build them or buy them elsewhere, on the other hand doesn’t really supply the promises itself. People start to think that the semi Muslim Obama that plays with a double pointed sword will come around to Israel. Israel was cheated out of a pro Israeli President in the last elections because the Jews felt that they were supporting a black christian. They have found that they are supporting a black Muslim. Obama has proven many times over his alleigence to the Muslim leadership even the most anti judeo-christian one in saudia bowing and talking about the HOLY KORAN over and over. He speaks Arabic with an Arab accent. He is not willing hear anything that truthfully besmirches the Muslims. He was willing to put a mosque a ground zero. The people he supports were responsible for 9/11, this we heard. I wonder If he danced in the streets with the Egyptian and Palestinian women when the twin towers fell danced and gave out sweets together. He pulled out of Iraq leaving a mess that the Americans will yet eat because brother achmedinejad has a hand in Iraq and soon he will annex Iraq in pieces. Ed I would be very care takling about our President who like any other Muslim would execute all the Homosexuals and girls that were raped. Semi Muslim Presidents do not suit America!

alan sutel says:

As a Jew I could never vote for Obama. This President obvioulsy is NOT a friend of Israel or the Jewish people. Do not forget how he treat PM. Netanyahu, not once, but twice, yet he apologizes to the Afghanies, and rolls out the red carpet for the Comunist Chinese. Who do think he is far more friendly towards?
