Gal Beckerman, an editor at the Forward and a friend of The Scroll, has won the 2012 Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature for his history of the movement to free Soviet Jewry, When They Come For Us We’ll Be Gone. (Runner-ups were Abigail Green, Ruth Franklin, Jonathan Krasner, and James Loeffler.) Beckerman gets the glory, a not insignificant sum of money, and hopefully more readers for his excellent book. “Now that he has told the story so well, however, it will surely take its rightful place as one of the greatest dramas in modern Jewish history,” wrote Adam Kirsch in his Tablet Magazine review. Gal also sat for a Vox Tablet podcast when the book came out. Mazel tov!
