• TWO JEWISH CONGRESSMEN FROM NEW YORK, Eliot Engel and Jerrold Nadler, along with Malcolm Hoenlein of the Conference of Presidents, were attacked by rock-throwing protesters in Jerusalem. There were also skirmishes around the Temple Mount, to which a right-wing politician was (falsely) rumored to be headed. [Jewish Press]

• SYRIA’S OPPOSITION is fractured along several different lines. [NYT]

• DIPLOMATS FROM THE SO-CALLED FRIENDS OF SYRIA, including Secretary of State Clinton, meet in Tunis today to discuss what should happen next. [LAT]

• A LIMITED WESTERN INTERVENTION should happen next, argues Anne-Marie Slaughter. [NYT]

• FOLLOWING UP ITS GILAD SHALIT SUCCESS, it turns out Egyptian intelligence brokered the end of Khader Adnan’s hunger strike. [Haaretz]

• RYAN BRAUN, the Jewish Milwaukee Brewers slugger and reigning National League Most Valuable Player, became the first baseball player ever to successfully appeal a positive result on a drug test. [NYT]

    These types of attacks are dangerous and regrettable. We must add, however, that Ras al Amud is highly contested and has been the site of considerable encroachment and development by individuals like Irving Moskowitz, who has long supported settling Jews in Arab neighborhoods in East Jerusalem–gaming a municipal system that has been demonstrated to treat Jews far more favorably than Palestinian residents. More clashes broke out there today because of an Israel government decision to expand settlement by 14 housing units today. Additionally, the Jewish Press piece fails to recognize that Jerusalem police last week arrested several Temple Mount activists who were planning to march on the Mount (see the Jerusalem Post.) These provocations come from *both sides* and they are truly troubling. Finally, one really must wonder where the Mayor of Jerusalem is when two U.S. Congressman are stoned while walking around in such a highly contested area of East Jerusalem. Malcolm Hoenlein really ought to have known this might happen. It’s the kind of political theater none of needs and comes dangerously close to threatening human life.

    Ah, making excuses for the rock-throwers.

    Too bad Ron Paul wasn’t with them. Perhaps he might change his views if his feet were on the ground.

    This kind of behavior is what Israelis have to live with. Just a few months ago a father and infant were killed when a rock went through the window of their car and struck Asher, causing him to lose control of the car.
