Daybreak: Israel Delays Outpost Removal

• The Israeli government has asked the High Court to postpone a deadline to evacuate a neighborhood in a West Bank outpost, to come up with an alternative that still wouldn’t be in line with the court’s decision. “According to legal experts, the government’s request represents a problematic move—breaking the accepted rules for the relationship between the executive and judicial branches,” reports Ari Shavit. • After three months with some power, Islamists in Egypt—the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafists—are losing popularity, largely because they haven’t been able to do much. [WSJ]

• Excellent, wide-ranging interview with President Peres. Says war is less likely than it was before: “People realize that nothing good can come of it.” [Haaretz]

• India has deported an Iranian man who was purportedly spying on Israeli and Jewish targets, including a Chabad house, in New Delhi. [The Pune Mirror/Vos Iz Neias?]

• “No president since Harry Truman”—who recognized the state of Israel—“has done more for Israel’s security than Barack Obama,” argued Vice President Biden, hitting the campaign trail to attack putative Republican nominee Mitt Romney. [JTA]

• Hyman “Big Hy” Strachman is a 92-year-old Jewish man on Long Island who fought in World War II and now sends bootlegged copies of movies to U.S. soldiers serving abroad. He is a hero, and you should read his story. [NYT]
