Taylor Swift Is Not Actually a Nazi

We’re still not really sure who Taylor Swift is, except that we know Kanye West isn’t a fan, and we have no idea at all who Katy Perry is, but apparently the former went to a birthday party for the latter, at which she had her picture taken with a dude wearing a swastika, and now no one is happy.

In 2006, Douglas Century traveled to Israel with photographer Antonin Kratochvil, to report on the country’s shifting organized crime scene. Guided by a former mob insider named Ilan, they were shown Tel Aviv’s alleyways and side streets, its seedy clubs and the back rooms—all the often-invisible places where the mob goes about its business. The photos below are snapshots from their visit to Israel’s underworld.

Unveiling

As a photographer who spent years documenting Jewish sites throughout Eastern Europe, I have a perhaps heightened sensitivity to the use and misuse of Judaica. In town after town from—Prague, Czech Republic, to Uman, Ukraine, with plenty of small villages in between—I’ve found and photographed Jewish gravestones used as walls, as chimneys, and roads. So when I was walking with my 7-year-old son past the 17th hole of the Woodmere Club’s golf course, on Long Island, I was surprised to find a Star of David carved into a stone used as part of a retaining wall, protecting the course from the Reynolds Channel. I looked closer, and discovered hundreds of gravestones, many carved with Jewish names, used as embankment material. The New York Post reported on this yesterday; the club insists the stones—none of which seem to contain dates, only names and symbols—were extra granite, donated many years ago by long-dead club members. Here, for the first time, is a collection of my photos.

Heil, Khamenei?

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei wasn’t giving a Nazi salute when a Getty Images photographer snapped him for the picture now displayed on the CNN.com homepage, was he? Some alternative theories:

• “Guys, shhh.”
• “Here we go, yo.”
• “By the power of Jesus, I command these demons to leave your body.”
• “No, I think the right side needs to be just a little bit lower.”
• “If you’ve finished the silent amidah, please be seated and turn to page 381.”
