No sooner had Netflix released its new comedy “You People” last weekend than the bien-pensants of cyberspace began shrieking condemnations or crowing words of praise. Depending on who you asked, the movie—about a young Jewish man who falls in love with a young Black woman, much to the bafflement of their misguided families—was either this generation’s “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” a brave and honest meditation on race relations in America, or the latest salvo of anti-Jewish vitriol this side of Kyrie Irving and Kanye West. I’ve got good news: It’s neither. It’s still very much worth watching, though, because “You People,” hallelujah, is just the major motion picture that American Jews deserve.
