As anyone who has been on the New York City subway knows, the cars can be packed like a sardine can or completely empty, brightly lit or exceedingly dim, antiseptically clean or covered in newspapers, spilled coffee, and old cans. But one thing is almost always true—most people avoid eye contact and keep to themselves at all costs, and those who don’t, stand out.
