A record number of people visited Auschwitz in 2014, with the museum logging 1,534,000 visits. The former Nazi concentration camp complex, which is open to the public, consists of Auschwitz and Birkenau (Auschwitz II), as well as the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.

According to officials, the highest number of visitors—some 398,000—came from within Poland, followed by the U.K. (199,000), and the United States (92,000). This year 75,000 visitors came from Germany, 62,000 from Israel, and an impressive 41,000 from South Korea.

Museum officials said the month with the highest attendance was August, when approximately 210,000 people visited, and the lowest attendance rate was in January, with just over 45,000 visitors.

Dr. Piotr M.A. Cywiński, the director of the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial and museum, said in a statement, “Without the reference to the history of this place it would be hard for new generations to understand our reality and challenges of the contemporary world.”
