With Mother’s Day and Yom Hazikaron—Israel’s Memorial Day—both poised to begin this Sunday, Tamar Fox reflects today in Tablet Magazine on the primal connection between honoring mothers, remembering dead mothers (such as her own), and experiencing grief. It is fitting, Fox decides, that Mother’s Day started as a crusade for a “Mother’s Day for Peace” in post-Civil War America.
