In addition to Unorthodox—the universe’s leading Jewish podcast—the Tablet Studios team put out a number of other podcasts in 2022, from our daily Talmud podcast Take One, hosted by Liel Leibovitz, to our 8-part narrative series Gatecrashers, about the hidden history of Jews and the Ivy League, hosted by Mark Oppenheimer. This past year also saw the second iteration of Kylie Unell’s spiritual journey with 49 Days to Stretch My Soul, a modern take on the counting of the Omer, as well as The Franchise, a limited series about Jews, sports, and America, and the latest season of Hebrew School, our kids game show podcast.

In total, we aired 354 episodes across our six podcasts. Here are six of our favorite episodes—one from each show—to get you started on the Tablet Studios canon.

Episode 2: Princeton and the Dirty Bicker of 1958

This narrative series from Unorthodox’s Mark Oppenheimer tells the story of how the Jewish experience in the Ivy League shaped American higher education, and shaped America at large, through eight episodes that each focus on one of the eight Ivy League schools. Episode 2 revisits a curious social scandal that left Jews out of—and nearly upended—Princeton’s exclusive eating clubs.

Episode 3: 40 Years in the Desert—Jews and the New York Mets

This 8-part series explores the intersection of sports and American Jewish culture. In Episode 3, host Meredith Shiner posits that if baseball is the most Jewish sport, then there is nothing more Jewish than the New York Mets. Loving the Mets means wandering the desert season after season—and never giving up on this team, no matter how much goes wrong. (And a lot seems to go wrong.)

Nedarim 30: The Importance of the Colloquial

Each day on Take One, Liel Leibovitz reads the daily page of Talmud, calling on friends and experts to help make this ancient text relevant in modern times. This particular page, Nedarim 30, discusses the importance of language, so our in-house hip-hop expert, Tablet Studios director of production Josh Kross, joins Liel to discuss the ways in which hip-hop has created art out of the vernacular, elevating everyday language into something sublime.

Week 6, Day 3: Doing Yesod

The Jewish tradition of counting the Omer marks the 49 days between the second night of Passover and the start of Shavuot. It’s a time of introspection and an opportunity for spiritual challenge and growth, and on this 49-day series Kylie Unell continues her spiritual journey by putting a modern spin on this contemplative Jewish tradition. On this episode, Kylie talks to strangers to find out what connection means to them.

Season 3, Episode 2: Tzedakah

Kids play fun games to learn about all things Jewish on our game show podcast, now back in its third season (with accompanying resources for educators from our friends at the Jewish Education Project).
