One of the responsibilities we have is not only to highlight what’s broken about Jewish and American life, but also to shine a light on people and organizations doing good and important work.
We’re inspired by the work of the Aleph Institute, which offers meaningful assistance to the incarcerated and their families, while working toward broad-scale criminal justice reform. Rooted in Jewish principles, their efforts—which we recently profiled in Tablet—provide spiritual and emotional support to both Jewish and non-Jewish prison inmates.
As we usher in the High Holidays, a time of introspection reinforced by charitable acts and deeds, their work seems ever more important. We’d like to ask Tablet Members to join us in volunteering with the Aleph Institute in one of two ways:
Pen-pal program: Letter-writers, including Tablet editor in chief Alana Newhouse, will be matched with Jewish inmates; sign up here.
In-person Torah study: Tablet editor at large Liel Leibovitz will be leading a one-day class at a NYC-area prison in early November, which a small group of Tablet members will be able to join. Information and clearance forms here.
As always, you can email us with any questions: [email protected].
Become a member of Tablet and access special events, conversations with writers and editors, and much more. Join us here.
