Breaking yet expected news from the National Basketball Association: David Stern has announced that he will step down as commish in February 2014. Stern will retire on the 30th anniversary of his start date, serving one year for each team (as he likes to say).

“I don’t know what else to say other than to recite what I told the owners yesterday in executive session,” Stern, 70, said at a news conference. “I told them that it’s been a great run, it will continue for another 15 months, that the league is in, I think, terrific condition.”

But fear not hoop dreamers, the next in line is the deputy commissioner. His name: Adam Silver.
